Maclaren launches ‘Most compact stroller the universe has ever seen!’

Maclaren, long-serving king of the umbrella stroller, has launched its first ever concertina-fold in the form of the ultra-compact and lightweight Atom.

Quick Summary: Available only in black with white detailing, it is sold as the Atom Style Set, comprising the pushchair itself, raincover, Infant Comfort Pack, seat liner and storage bag.

Despite the very enthusiastic space-themed marketing, the Atom isn't actually the lightest or most compact stroller the universe - or we - have ever seen. What is impressive is that for a very lightweight buggy that folds down small enough to fit in the overhead locker on a plane, it can take a maximum load of up to 25kg. Given that heat, long distances and evening exploring on holiday often mean an older toddler or preschooler who barely uses a stroller any more at home will need one when you're away, this is a big plus-point.

The multiple recline positions include lie-flat, making the Atom suitable for a newborn, especially with the Infant Comfort Pack included, and the ability to transform the stroller into a travel system with the addition of adaptors (£30) and a compatible infant carrier gives another dimension.

The Atom may not quite "take any traveller to the far corners of the galaxy and back" but it will take you to most places that your normal family adventures in town will. The wheels are small but have all-round suspension and - cue more brownie points from busy parents - the seat is removable and machine washable.

The Maclaren Atom Style Set is out now, priced at £350, and a coordinating Jet Pack travel bag and Atom Organiser with pockets for drinks, nappies, keys, phone and more are also available, featuring the Atom space motif in white on black.
