Has my car got ISOFIX?

Has my car got ISOFIX?

We are asked this question regularly in store and via social media and we understand why. Before you are having a child, you’re likely to not even know what ISOFIX is or whether your car has it. Why would you?

Quick Summary: ISOFIX is an internationally recognised, standardised car seat fitting system which securely connects either your car seat or base onto two metal points, which are welded to the chassis of your car. The chassis is deemed the strongest part of the car should you be involved in any collision. However, most people do not automatically know whether their car has ISOFIX or where to find it.

There are a few simple ways to find out whether your car has got ISOFIX:

• Go and have a look – this is perhaps the easiest option. A lot of vehicles have either a tiny plastic circle on the seat back, tags between the back of the seat and seat base or a black cap covering the ISOFIX points. Just to cause confusion, some cars have no indication and you have to stick your finger down the back of your seats. If you haven’t got children, you may find a pound coin – if you have got children you are likely to find the odd cheerio and raisin. If you have ISOFIX, you will locate two metal hoops. Generally, ISOFIX points are located in the back seats behind the passenger and driver’s seats but some cars also have them in the middle seat and even the front passenger seat.

• Check your car manual, if you haven’t lost it of course! You can download most manuals from the Internet if you need it.

• Google it – if you are struggling to find the answer, there are bound to be other parents that have had the same question.

• So hopefully now you know whether your car has ISOFIX or not! If it doesn’t, don’t panic as there are lots of non-ISOFIX options which, as long as you install them correctly, are just as safe as an ISOFIX-installed seat.
