'i-Size' is a safety regulation for child car seats, officially known as ECE R129. It was actually introduced way back in 2013. The idea behind i-Size is that it makes car seats easier to fit for parents and keeps children safer.
i-Size seats can only refer to seats that are installed using a cars ISOfix system. The majority of cars produced from 2004 onward tend to have ISOfix anchor points fitted into their rear seats.
Don't panic, it' not compulsory to travel your child in an i-Size car seat just yet. The i-Size regulations run alongside the car seat regulations you might be more familiar with (officially known as the R44 standard), so you don't need to go out and buy new car seats just yet but we strongly recommend any parents expecting look at i-Size car seats now to prepare them for future changes in the law.
More and more brands are bringing out i-Size car seats, so here's a quick round-up of what they offer over and above other (R44) car seats...
i-Size seats use the child's height as a correct fit indicator and not their weight as other car seats might use. It's worth getting to grips with your child's\ height in cm before you go shopping for an i-Size seat.
i-Size means all babies must be rearward-facing up to the age of 15 months.
i-Size seats encourage parents to keep their child travelling in a rear facing position for as long as possible and often seats can accommodate children rear facing up to 105cm in height which is about 4 years old. Previously parents have tended to move their children to forward facing seats at around 9-12 month old which has been proven to be far too early with the help of safety testing.
i-Size seats keep your child super safe by having to pass an additional side impact protection test to ensure that the seats provide better protection for your little ones in the event of a side on collision.
There are quite a few seats on the market now, so here's a few you might want to take a look at.
