Review // Thule Urban Glide 2

Thule's popular and award-winning Urban Glide stroller has undergone several upgrades for 2018. Thule is a Scandinavian family-founded business that has an ever-growing fan base in the UK among outdoors-loving families in the know! Multiple Paralympic medal winner and GB cyclist Sarah Storey, who has two young children and lives on the edge of the Peak District, is something of an ambassador. After testing the Urban Glide 2 out for the last month, it is easy for us to see why!

Opening the Thule box, we expected the usual no-frills jogging stroller to appear. How wrong we were! The assembly requirements were simple, all that is needed is to pop on the three wheels and away we went.

As well as the focus on functionality, this lean mean three-wheeled machine is keen to score highly in the style stakes too, with a lovely fluid appearance. All of the pushchair buttons are colour coded in a bright blue colour so they are easily seen and reached when out strolling in streets, parks or woodland. (It also meant that I didn't have to explain how to fold or operate the brake to my husband as he was able to just follow the bright blue clues!)

The adjustable handlebar moves from a height of 100cm to 115cm - a perfect range for the tallest and smallest of drivers. The handlebar includes the brand-new feature of a twisting dynamic handbrake to help you alter the speed of your pushchair when tackling different terrain. We loved the added sense of control and security this provided when we were pushing a heavier baby or toddler in the pushchair.

The three stylishly sleek air tyres offered ultimate stability and performance over any terrain that we pushed over, and the addition of suspension means your passenger gets the smoothest of rides too. The Urban Glide 2, although light, feels super-stable and totally balanced, even when laden with a preschooler at the pushchair's 34kg weight limit.

There is an easy-to-operate twist lever above the front wheel, which you simply twist to lock or swivel the front wheels dependent upon whether you are strolling on rough or smooth ground. When I was using the Glide 2 around shops, the wheel was in swivel mode; if we decided to go for the odd run around the park, we locked the wheel into position to give a bit more stability.

In addition to the dynamic handbrake, there is also a foot brake situated between the rear wheels. It flicks on and off effortlessly and is colour coded red so is easily spotted.

One thing that we really did love about the Urban Glide 2 is that it has an amazingly large and fantastically sturdy shopping basket. This basket has the great addition of a zip-closing lid to make sure things don't jump you're out whilst you're on the move. It also meant that any valuables were kept safely hidden when we were in busier places such as shops and supermarkets.

If you are looking for a pushchair from birth and want a lie-flat parent-facing option for your newborn, the Urban Glide 2 can be used with a Thule bassinet. You also have the option of turning it into a travel system with the purchase of car seat adapters. We love the versatility this brings to this super-stylish all-terrain pushchair.

The seat unit is tall and wide, meaning you really can make use of this pushchair right up until your children reach the weight limit (around 5 or 6 years old!).

The harness straps are nicely padded and easily fastened by popping the harness teeth into the blue buckle clasp one at a time. We did wonder if we would find this design a little time consuming but actually it was really useful when we were wrestling a defiant toddler into the seat.

The seat fabric is cleverly made of a wipeable polyester fabric, which is also splash proof. When the inevitably spills happened we just took a baby wipe to them and all was as good as new!

The recline is operated by a simple strap mechanism on the rear of the seat. Simply squeeze the clamp and drop the seat downwards, and then squeeze again and pull the cord to sit the seat upright. Because of this design, it's worth taking note that the seat doesn't seem to sit bolt upright so some children may feel frustrated about this but others may be just as happy to sit back and enjoy the ride.

Just below the recline strap sits a great-sized mesh pouch to keep your valuables and essentials within easy reach. We kept wipes, hats and gloves in here and found it a really useful storage space.

The hood is large and features a small integrated sun visor. There is the option of extending the hood with the small zip-open extension panel towards the back of the hood, which does make the hood slightly bigger and provides slightly better coverage.

One thing that we would have loved is a raincover included in the box. Unfortunately the pushchair doesn't come with this as standard, but there is a specialist Thule raincover that can be purchased as an added extra.

The fold is quick and simple and can be operated with just one hand after a few practices. Again, the fold operations are colour coded in blue so you can't go far wrong. The frame also has an automatic locking lever to keep it closed whilst lifting and transporting the pushchair, which was really useful.

As with any three-wheeled stroller, the wheels are large, so to get the optimum fold, it's handy to take the rear wheels off, and then the package is neatly compact and easily popped into the car boot or a cupboard for storage.

The Urban Glide 2 is a cleverly built, versatile addition to the three-wheeled pushchair market. It is jam-packed with handy features such as the extendable hood with peek-a-boo window, super-sized shopping basket with zip-close cover, mesh hood ventilation panels, storage pockets on the rear of the seat and a one-handed fold.

The Urban Glide 2 would suit families who like to get out and explore the world around them. Not just confined to smoother paths and pavements, the swivel option of the Urban Glide 2's front wheel along with the juicy tyres means that it is just as nippy over rough terrain walks as on urban trips to the shops. It can even be used for the odd park run too.

The fact that the raincover needs to be purchased as an additional accessory has to be factored in when budgeting (there are several other matching accessories to check out too), but the Urban Glide 2 more than holds its own in the market for all-round three-wheeled strollers.
