Maclaren Techno XLR Review

Maclaren are renowned for being the innovators of lightweight strollers and consistently improve and develop their products to adapt to the modern family. We have the latest Maclaren Techno XLR in for review...see what you think...

Back in 1965 Owen Maclaren, an aeronautical engineer from London, designed a solution for his daughter, who struggled with the size of her cumbersome pram when travelling. Realizing that she needed something more compact, he used his knowledge of aeroplane manifolds to build his daughter the very first baby buggy. His lightweight aluminium frame and innovative compact fold remains the blueprint for most stroller style buggies on the market.

One of the more recent offerings from the Maclaren stable is the latest evolution of the Techno XLR; a from birth compact stroller that could see you through to a time when wheels are no longer necessary.

Love them or hate them, there is no doubt strollers/buggys have revolutionised the flexibility of parents with young children. Over the past 50+ years, Maclaren have been the primary name associated with lightweight, umbrella-fold pushchairs and have only made fractional changes in that time. The Techno XLR is at the luxury end of stroller choices as it incorporates some of the features you would normally only find on a high-end pushchair.

The Maclaren Techno XLR has comfortable, ergonomic, punch-hold, handles that extend...WOW! Yes, a stroller with extendable handles. It's not a common feature but don't get too excited, they only extend by 4cm but for some parents that could be all that's needed to make pushing comfortable for both of them. Each handle is adjusted separately using the buttons below.

A substantial canopy with a clear viewing pane and a flip-out visor, is made rigid using the brackets on the sides. Oddly, the flip-out visor is clear uPVC which in the UK is better deployed as a wind cheater than a sun visor! The rear of the canopy has two large pockets; one is a net with a Velcro closure. Both are in the perfect place to make them handily accessible and very useful. The canopy can be unzipped to allow it to follow the direction of the sun, giving sun protection at all times.

The seat is beautifully padded, quilted and incorporates  a comfortable, adjustable 5-point childproof harness. The harness is easily threaded through a choice of two shoulder heights. The footrest can be in one of two positions, either extended out horizontally to support sleepy legs or at 90 degrees for when he/she wants to sit up.

One of the best features of this pushchair is the recline and relatively unique in the stroller world. Squeezing the button on the back of the seat will give you full control to gently recline your child in 4 positions, nearly flat when fully reclined to around 170 degrees.

The rear of the canopy encloses the reclined seat to protect the occupant from the elements and provide them with the right conditions for snoozing . When sat upright, the back rest is 48cms with a further 16cms headroom in the canopy.

Below is the seat basket that is not enormous but enough for a couple of bags of shopping. Each 16.5cm set of wheels has built-in suspension to cushion the ride. The rear wheels each have a brake pedal so that you can apply or release on the left or the right.

Fold

Folding the Maclaren Techo XLR takes one hand and very little effort. With your foot, flick the red button in the centre back of the frame upwards and then step on the release trigger on the right. The handles will come together and fold down, towards the front wheels. The automatic clip closure ensures that the folded frame won't spring open when you least expect it and the rubber carry handle on the side makes it conveniently transportable.

To open, simply release the locking latch, pull up the handles and step on the red button on the centre back of the frame. A click will let you know that the frame has been tensioned and is ready to use.

Conclusion

I am over the moon that some of the elements from larger pushchairs are working their way into strollers. The Maclaren Techno XLR has two brilliant features that buggys rarely possess – adjustable handle height and a one-hand recline.

The fact that it can be transformed into a travel system using the Recaro Young Profi Plus car seat, or comfortably accommodate a newborn in the soft carrycot makes it a very attractive proposition. It will see you all the way through to when your child leaves home!.....well, not quite but at least until they start walking properly.

The only thing not to like about the Techno XLR is the price. At £265 the stroller on its own, I think it is a little steep, but if you're going to use it all the way through (whole package £465) then it is a relatively reasonable investment.

Altogether, the Maclaren Techno XLR is a top quality stroller that can perform the tricks of much more sophisticated pushchairs. So if you need a compact, lightweight solution to your child's transport, this works well, but if you're simply looking for a bog standard stroller it may be a little on the pricey side.
