Family focused parenting brand Ickle Bubba have added a double to their extensive range of pushchairs and we can't wait to let you know how it performed when we took it for a spin.

Review Summary

Affordable, stylish and functional double pushchairs can be hard to find but the Ickle Bubba Venus offers a really great option for parents in the market for a pushchair for two. The individually reclining seats, great sun hoods and extra large basket are just a few of the fabulous features that the Venus brings to the table.

Ickle Bubba Venus Review

When the Ickle Bubba Venus landed at Pushchair Expert HQ we were thrilled to see that the well known and well loved brand were introducing a side by side double pushchair to their range. Assembling the Venus in its Prime edition, we quickly realised that you get a lot for your money. Included in the box with the pushchair is also a newborn cocoon (a soft carrycot to enable you to use the Venus with a newborn) as well as two foot cosies, bumper bars and the raincover. The Venus is also available as a standalone pushchair and in the Max version with the footmuffs included, if you don't require the cocoon.

Assembly was quick and simple and the Venus was ready for passengers within ten minutes. We were immediately struck by the stylish looks of Venus. The sleek black chassis against the streamlined but substantial enough wheels gave a really pleasing to the eye picture. The basket space underneath the seats provided us with more than enough space to keep our belongings. We found the basket space easy to use as we could pop things in from the front and back and when the calf rests were raised there was lots of space to pack in the coats making school runs, shopping trips and days our easy to pack for.

The simple flick on and off brake is next to the right hand wheel. It is easy to use and easy to reach with your foot. The wheels are made of a good quality material and strolled smoothly when we were out and about. The wheels aren't suitable for going off the beaten track but for slightly uneven ground we were able to lock the front wheels off and we were able to push over grass and gritty paths more easily.

With a fixed height, the handlebar sits at a comfortable height for our 5'6" tester. It is covered in zip on leather style covers which give a stylish and more luxury feel to your pushchair driving experience. Steering and driving using the single handlebar was effortless for the most part requiring just a bit more muscle when the pushchair had two toddlers in it or we were going up and down kerbs.

Offering two seats, side-by-side, the Venus gives a great option for both parents of twins and parents of different aged siblings.

Each seat reclines individually using a strap recline system. The recline was simple to use - the beauty of it being that you can choose the perfect angle for your child however we could often be seen using our head to take the weight of the seat whilst pushing the recline back up using two hands.

Each seat also has its own bumper bar for its passengers to hold onto whilst out and about. The bumper bars can be removed completely or alternatively they can be pivoted from one side which was handy when getting baby out of the seat.

The seats have a really great length, combine this with the adjustable calf rest and babies of all ages can have a really comfortable ride in the seat. The calf rest was easily adjusted up and down by pressing the buttons on either side.

If you want to use the Venus from birth then you can do this by reclining the seats to their lowest position. If you prefer your newborn to be a bit more sheltered and to be facing you, then Ickle Bubba have accommodated this by including a soft bodied carrycot or ‘cocoon' in the box with the Venus Prime. To pop the cocoon onto the seat, recline the seat to the flat position and raise the calf rest. Then, thread the belts of the cocoon through the sides of the seat fabrics and buckle underneath. The cocoon provides a nice and deep nest for newborns to sleep in and they are really sheltered from the elements this way too. You do only get one cocoon in the box but extras can be purchased if you wanted to use the venus with twins from birth.

The cocoons will need to be removed to fold but the clips, poppers and toggles are easily undone in next to no time at all.

The hood has a peekaboo window in the back panel which was great for sneaking a peek at baby as we strolled. The hood gives great coverage and even more so when the extendable panel is zipped open to reveal more ventilation panels and give even more coverage.

The harness on the Venus is basic and simple but the diamond embroidery in the fabrics and the leather look bumper bars add to its stylish overall looks.

Finding a double with a simple fold can be a task in itself however the Venus fold couldn't be more straightforward. It is all operated from the handlebar of the pushchair. You can clearly see a black console in the centre of the handlebar and by sliding the black button on top of the handlebar to the left and simultaneously squeezing the button under the handlebar in, you can fold the whole pushchair in a jiffy.

There is a frame lock on the side of the pushchair which is great to make sure the chassis isn't flapping as you carry it. The fold is neat and compact but this is still a side by side pushchair so you do have the width to contend with when storing or transporting in your car boot. We found the Venus stood up easily behind doors or in corners and didn't take up much space at all compared to other double pushchairs on the market.

Our verdict

Affordable, stylish and functional double pushchairs can be hard to find but the Ickle Bubba Venus offers a really great option for parents in the market for a pushchair for two. The individually reclining seats, great sun hoods and extra large basket are just a few of the fabulous features that the Venus brings to the table.

Designed to assist you on your parenting journey, the Ickle Bubba Venus is simple to use. The easy fold will save parents a lot of headaches as well as a lot of time but some features like the fixed height handlebar and the strap recline system might be points to consider.

The inclusion of the newborn cocoon in the Prime package gives parents the option to nestle their newborn in a cosy and safe environment and is an extra that other brands would charge far more of a premium for. Overall, we really enjoyed using the Venus as a pushchair for two.
