There are very few pushchairs that can offer the faultless functionality and superb style that the new and improved iCandy Orange brings to the table. Whether you are a new parent expecting your first baby or a family expecting a new sibling, the Orange is as versatile as the day is long and to top it off, it looks great too!
The new and improved ‘go anywhere' wheels, sleek and stylish chassis, sumptuous fabrics and easy to use compact fold are just a few of the superb features which impressed us.
For your first child it can be used as a single pram and pushchair with oodles of shopping space and as your family grows the Orange can become a pushchair for two in multiple configurations. The integrated ride-on board eliminates the need to fiddle with additional accessories for your toddler and as we discovered whilst out and about, is extremely practical.
We last reviewed the iCandy Orange back in 2017 where it revealed itself as an innovation in practicality. Now, in 2021, the Orange has undergone some significant design improvements to bring you an even more refined parenting experience. Unboxing the new Orange, you can instantly feel that the weight of the chassis is lighter than the previous model. The iCandy design team have worked across the chassis with a fine tooth comb and carefully shaved kg off the chassis weight. Whilst the Orange is still incredibly good looking (if you can call a pushchair that?!), you can see the silhouette has altered slightly and the chassis looks even more sleek and refined than the previous model.
Starting from the wheels and working up…. again we encounter changes and design alterations from the word go. The new wheels have been completely restyled meaning they are lighter than before. We really loved the design changes to the front wheel especially. They are incredibly easy to operate and flick into a fixed position if you are encountering rougher ground and the large rear wheels, although lighter, really powered over absolutely any terrain that we encountered. The rear wheelbase is 60cm wide which is narrower than other single to tandem competitive pushchairs on the market but still without compromising on seat space which is fabulous. Driving through doorways and in tight spaces was really easy. The tyres are made of a quality rubber-like material and have exceptional grip and give the little pushchair passenger the smoothest of rides.
At the side of the right rear wheel sits the brake pedal. The rounded shape of the pedal means there's no risk of catching your feet in those long awaited summer months when you are wearing sandals. The brake pedal is again practical to use and easy to reach even with a child stood on the integrated ride-on board.
The handlebar is covered in a lovely leather-like material again adding to the aesthetics of this stylish set of wheels and handily adjusts in height using a simple palm button up to 110cm in height which is great for pushchair drivers of all heights.
Whether you are a first-time parent or an experienced parent there is no doubt that storage will be at the top of your list of priorities when it comes to choosing a pushchair. We can confirm that the basket on the iCandy Orange is suitably large and will carry changing bags, picnics and all of your goodies without a doubt.
We also love that the new Orange comes with a stylish matching backpack changing bag and coordinating footmuff with a cosy lining. Usually these are extra to your pushchair that soon bump the price up.
We have been reviewing the iCandy Orange as a single pushchair and pram but in fact it can also be used as a tandem pushchair that has the ability to seat two children, a fantastic attribute to bear in mind if you are buying this pushchair as a first time parent. It really is ‘future-proof!'
In the box with the Orange comes a frame and two sets of fabrics to use the frame as a carrycot or as a seat unit. The Orange is suitable from birth when used with the carrycot fabrics. They are easy to pop, velcro and zip onto the frame creating a sumptuous comfortable nest for your little newborn to sleep in safely. The deep sides to the carrycot as well as the high quality vented mattress and the velour liner are really something special and equally as luxurious as the fabrics on any nursery bedding set. Thanks to the wonderfully designed safety features, the iCandy Orange carrycot has passed all of the relevant safety tests to be used as a permanent sleep space for baby meaning there is no reason to purchase an additional moses basket or bedside crib for your baby.
The hood on the carrycot is also used on the seat unit too. It too has seen design changes most notably in the use of the brand new ottoman fabric which is extremely soft to the touch and very elegant to the eye. The hood extends using a zip open panel and provides wonderful coverage. We found the ventilation panels in the hood extremely useful to make sure that baby had air flowing through their cosy space whilst at the same time they also allowed us to peek in on our baby whilst we were on to go.
In the box with the Orange you will find a set of adapters called elevators. These small objects are wonderful things and you must never underestimate them until you have tried them for yourself! Adding the elevators to the chassis of the Orange gives you the ability to alter the position of the carrycot and bring baby closer to you. Not only does this increase your ability to see baby more clearly and interact with them but it also means that you do not find yourself bending down to reach into baby. They may look simple but they really do enhance the usability of the pushchair and are wonderful things!
When baby is able to sit unaided it is time to move from the carrycot to the seat unit. There is no need for any additional purchases as the seat fabrics come in the box with your original purchase. Just unzip, clip and remove the carrycot fabrics from the frame and replace them with the seat fabrics. Whilst doing this the first thing that you will notice is how soft and light the new ottoman fabrics of the seat unit are. When all is set up it is clear to see that the seat is tall and roomy. Once in this seat your baby can continue to use the range up until they weigh 25kg, this is a wonderful high weight limit which will see your child out to the end of their pushchair using years.
The hood on the seat is the same hood as we see on the carrycot. It extends with a zip right down to the bumper bar of the seat unit and has a great viewing/ventilation window to peek through without disturbing your baby or babies.
There is a recline button on the back of the seat unit that can be operated with one hand. Baby can nap and play on the go, all in the comfort of the super-soft fabrics of the roomy seat.
The seat can be removed from the frame using the light grey buttons clearly indicated on the side of the seat and can face in either direction. Again the elevators can be used to alter the position of the seat. Whether you choose to use the seat parent-facing or world-facing, the adapters can bring baby closer to you or even used the opposite way around to create more room if you have a child riding on the integrated ride-on board.
The updates in the Orange design are clear to see in the seat unit. The new fabrics cover all of the seat, even the base and back of the seat. There is also a handy storage pouch on the back of the seat fabrics which we found extremely useful for keeping keys and small items in.
As well as the integrated ride-on board which is so easy for toddlers to pop on and off there is also the ability to use the Orange with two carrycots and two seats. We loved this aspect of the pushchair design as it meant as new parents we had no need to buy a second pushchair or double as we added to our family. All you need to do is purchase a second seat and away you go! There are multiple configurations that you can use meaning there will be a set up suitable for everyone's needs.
Overall the seat is comfortable for baby and looks exceptionally smart. The Orange is certainly a head turner and many parents commented on its stunning good looks whilst we were out and about.
The fold is another aspect which the iCandy design team has meticulously altered to make sure it gives parents the best of the best. The re-designed front wheels now mean that the fold of the Orange is even more compact than the previous model. The front wheels tuck right into the folded pushchair package making it extremely streamlined and able to stand in the tightest of spaces. We tended to store the Orange behind our hall door and we could hardly tell it was there.
To operate the fold you pull the levers on either side of the chassis. These levers are now clearly colour coded in a slightly lighter grey than they used to be, again making the Orange completely user friendly. When folded the pushchair chassis locks together automatically and to release you use the again colour coded lock release which is easy to reach and in a slightly different position to the previous model.
If you want to fold the pushchair with the seat in place this is also possible. The end package is understandably a little larger than if you were to remove the seat but still compact all the same and a very quick and easy way to collapse your pushchair if you are in a hurry or need to see to your hungry baby.
