Sophie's Verdict:

The company behind some of the most popular baby carriers around now brings us a set of wheels in the form of the Ergobaby METRO, a compact stroller designed to be an ultra-convenient travel solution for you and your little one. So what did we think?

Ergobaby METRO Review

Slim, streamlined and made for riding the hustle and bustle of public transport with ease, the first thing that strikes us about the METRO is the size. Or lack of it. The neat little box of this stroller is a clear indicator of the neat dimensions of baby's new set of wheels inside it. The METRO itself is ready to roll as soon as you take it out. The black chassis looks smart and, when you stand behind it, feels strong but is light enough to lift with a few fingers.

The next feature that we are really impressed with is the wheels. The tyres are made of great quality materials and they roll smoothly over all urban surfaces. Going up and down kerbs and small steps was easy no matter what size of passenger we had in the seat.

The simple foot brake also gets a thumbs-up from us as it was always simple yet effective to use.

City dwellers always need plenty of storage, especially if you're off to the shops. The METRO has a neat (there's that word again!) basket underneath its seat, which can take 4.5 kg of luggage. We found the basket great for holding our essentials, and managed to fit a small backpack, two coats and a pair of shoes in there with ease.

The main party trick of the METRO compared to many other small city strollers is the ability to use it with a Newborn Kit for babies from birth to around 6 months old. The Newborn Kit is in essence a carrycot that can be cleverly folded with the stroller without having to remove it. We were really impressed with how easy it was to attach the Newborn Kit onto the stroller to make it into a miniature pram system, and the cosy environment it provides is perfect for keeping small babies safe and warm and sheltered from the fast pace of city life.

Seat and Newborn Kit

After just a week of daily outings with the Ergobaby METRO, we have fallen in love with its practicality and ease of use. There are no fancy features and no frills but what this stroller does do is slot into our busy urban family life seamlessly.

The seat reclines using a strap system that is neatly zipped away in the back of the seat. It is so simple and we were able to adjust the seat to the perfect position for baby in just a few seconds. It might be worth noting that we could never manage to operate this with just one hand with the weight of baby in the seat, but it was an easy procedure nevertheless.

The adjustable footrest was really handy. When baby is younger you keep it up and it gives a good space for your little one to rest their legs, then as they grow you can pop it down to allow longer legs to rest on the footplate.

We do need to talk about the hood of this stroller. As effective as it is, it is made from a lycra material and set quite high on the frame of the stroller so that it covers your hands and sits higher than the handlebar when it is pulled back. That aside, when fully extended it gives amazing coverage to protect baby.

The Newborn Kit is a brilliant addition to the METRO. It almost revolutionises city travel with a new baby, making the stroller into a classic pram in a super-small package. The carrycot of the Newborn Kit is the only pram to be certified ‘back healthy' by the AGR of Germany.

It took about two minutes for us to hook the Newborn Kit onto the stroller frame and it felt just as cosy and sheltered as a full-sized pram.

Small folding pushchairs are certainly trending right now and the METRO doesn't disappoint in this department. Pop the handlebar down and lift the carry handle in the seat and voila! Fold complete! It all locks together in a jiffy and we were able to fold the pushchair with baby on one hip too. We found it really handy to carry the stroller like a briefcase when tackling steep stairs in busy stations, and we could even do this with the Newborn Kit in place.

The fold package is pretty small even by stroller standards and we were thankful of the extra space in the boot of our test car, a Nissan Micra. We tended to store the stroller in the footwell of the car as it was quicker and easier to grab when getting in and out in a hurry - and that way the whole boot was free for the food shop too!

During coffee shop trips we just tucked the stroller underneath the table or in a corner, which earned a few adoring looks from parents and cafe staff alike!

To unfold the METRO, just release to auto-lock and with a flick of your wrist the whole pushchair clicks up again. It really was that simple!

The Ergobaby METRO adds an extra dimension with the ability to use the Newborn Kit, which offers parents a versatility that isn't always an option with other lightweight strollers on the market. You can now comfortably use it from birth.

The seat is comfortable for babies and toddlers but you might just have to get used to the high-set hood.

Overall it's an easy, functional choice that will fit neatly into your family life, especially if space is at a premium.
