We chatted with Maxi-Cosi to get the lowdown and learn how the technology works in more detail. If you want to know what makes this 21st century invention tick, read on.
With 4 years of research and 5 patents, you can begin to understand the commitment that Maxi-Cosi have made to this innovative car seat.
I guess the first question to Maxi-Cosi should be what started the chain of thought that led to the final invention?
Put simply, it was a question on why not?
"Cars are designed to transport adults and while they did get safer over the decades, child safety is mostly dependent on car seat legislation and experts," states Andrew Ratcliffe, Managing Director of Maxi-Cosi. "Real innovations need to come from our industry, that's why we are always trying to push the boundaries at Maxi-Cosi. A few years ago, we investigated if and how airbags could better protect a child's head and neck in forward-facing car seats."
Look at the video below and you will see exactly how the AxissFix Air works.
The airbag has been hailed as one of, if not the greatest advance in vehicle safety in modern times. Why was this not being applied to car seats to protect a family's most precious cargo?
Maxi-Cosi began exploring whether they could use airbags to better protect a child's head and neck during an accident, particularly in a forward-facing position. A partnership was born with a French company, Helite, who specialise in airbags for applications such as motorcycle jackets, aircraft belts and even applications for skiing.
This partnership jointly explored the ultimate goal of better protecting children within cars using airbag technology. Maxi-Cosi Air Safety Technology® was born.
Months of development and testing eventually gave rise to the AxissFix Air a groundbreaking 360° rotating car seat that better protects children in an accident in both forward and rearward facing positions.
This new technology yielded some incredible results. The airbags reduced the forces of an impact on a child's head and neck by up to 55% for a child 1 and a half years old and 45% for a child who is 3 years old when compared to all other forward facing Maxi-Cosi car seats.
So how does it work?
Traditional adult airbags produce hot gases and a loud bang and at the speed and direction the airbags inflate, could actually cause more harm to a child.
When the system detects that an accident has happened - a signal is sent from the ISOFIX points to trigger the Air Safety Technology®.
Cold gas is then forced into the airbags and they inflate in 0.05 of seconds.
This next bit is very clever - the airbags actually deploy in the direction of travel, which has the effect of gently cushioning and slowing the head as it moves forward.
Finally after the initial impact, the airbags deflate in just 1 second clearing from the child's face.
You can see more about how it works in this video.
It is an incredibly quick, simple sounding process, but one that is clearly technically challenging. The use of the technology in this manner will, however, most certainly define car seat development over coming years.
Not resting on the success this new development will most certainly have, Maxi-Cosi combined this breakthrough technology with one their most versatile feature rich car seats - the AxissFix Air. This seat packs a huge amount of functionality into a surprisingly compact package.
The seat features:
• i-Size compliant
• ISOFIX vehicle connectivity
• 3rd anchor point usable when both forward and rearward facing
• Retractable tether means no leg is required freeing up footwell space
• Rearward and Forward facing from 61 - 102cm
• 360° rotation making access a breeze
• Adjustable recline
On October the 17th, you can walk into a store and purchase this incredible invention. What an achievement!
There is always innovation within the nursery industry, whether it is the latest pushchair or that clever little product you wish you had thought of that appeared on Dragons Den. Maxi-Cosi have developed something that stands out. It may have been potentially obvious to some, but it was clearly challenging to develop into such a clever simple finished product.
Our readers have an amazing opportunity. If you would like to win a Maxi-Cosi AxissFix Air please head over to our competition page before November the 17th.
